Top 5 Reason Why You Shouldn’t Switch to GNU Linux

All over the webz there are several sites giving you top 5 reasons why you should dump Mac OS X or Windows for GNU Linux. I disagree.

5.) Most of your Applications will not run Natively on GNU/Linux. Sure you can run things in Wine, but it will never run as well as it does natively. Some things just don’t work in Wine or they’re a bitch to set up. Quite of bit of business(at least the ones that my friends work at) write a lot of In-House Applications using .Net. Having that company switch to Linux would require to rewrite those applications to run on Mono.

4.) The community is not fully matured yet. People just want to use Linux so they can hate Microsoft or Apple. These 15 years old basement dwellers who have enough programming experience to code “Hello World” in C++(Like Adam King). Not to mention one of the answers to questions are: RTFM, WorksForMe(tm), and You Break It You Fix It On Your Own.(To be fair, not everyone in the Linux Community it complete dickwads. There are some great people that will help you out).

3.) Some of your devices may not work on GNU/Linux. You may install the latest version of Ubuntu and discover that it doesn’t work with your printer. That is no fun. Not all hardware works correctly with Linux.

2.) It can be tough learning a new Operating System. Why attempt to learn something new when you’re going to just use Firefox(Should use Opera) to surf the web no matter what OS you’re using.

1.) It’s a cult, and last time I check joining a cult is bad. It’s different if you’re setting up a Linux machine for a web server(though you should use FreeBSD or Windows Server 2008), but trying to convince everyone to install GNU/Linux on their Desktop because GNU/Linux is way superior in every way.

GNU/Linux is not the best choice for Desktop Computers. If you REALLY want to switch from Mac OS X, go to Windows. If you REALLY want to switch from Windows go to OS X. If you REALLY don’t like either, you can attempt PC-BSD or Solaris. I’m just sick of the bunch of sites say how awesome GNU/Linux is and that it blows all those crappy non-free OS. Spreading lies how Windows gets billions of Malware and BSODs (I don’t here of these problems much anymore) or how Linux it’s Free and you can do what ever you want with it. If it’s broken you can go in to the Linux’s code, change stuff and recompile. Because everyone knows how to write in C and has a full understanding of that poorly documented kernel.

    Your obviously stupid Windows Lover.

      Read this: this is beta…

      1.Why GPL is bad?
      Because you can’t make money of it. It is impossible. GPL allows to make money but do you want to programmers to beg without making a business actually?

      2.Why can’t you make money?
      Because if you sell a software, it will be bought by only some. If a person buys it, he will host it in a server. Then other people download it, without paying you a dollar…
      You may ask that he can sell it for high price…
      But they can’t… People will not buy high cost products…
      People prefer software that are both gratis and libre.

      3.There are many people making money with gpl, right?
      No
      They aren’t doing it.
      Most make copyright assignments to get permission to relicense it.
      Can you give examples?
      1.Oracle/Sun/Redhat: Definitely NOOO!
      They make money by making GPL’d parts PROPRIETARY! You may ask:
      1.Programmers can make money like that, right?
      NO! For relicensing, they need to get license from everyone who contribute. And gpl is viral… “A creates a software under GPL. B contributes in GPL (no copyright assignment). A wants to relicense it. He can’t relicense the code without getting permission from B/removing B’s parts. B can’t relicense the software without getting permission from A/removing parts of A.”
      2.MySQL is GPL! Right?
      Yes. It’s GPL but they receive a copyright assignment. They sell a proprietary-compatible license.

    I think your post is partly right.
    In my opinion, it depends on what you want to use your computer for.
    Are you an average »user« who also wants to run his favourite programs and games?
    Then you should stay with Windows or OSX (to a lesser extent). This is extremely obvious.

    If you’re a programmer, switching might be worth considering. For a programmer, it’s always better to experience new things and discover new ways of development, and Unix or GNU/Linux teach you that. This is even more obvious if you’re somebody who is interested in OS design and understanding his system. Linux is (I don’t think this is debatable) a lot more understandable and hackable than the other two big OS’s (OSX and Windows specifically). But of course, there are other operating systems that are as hackable.

    One point where your only solution is something GNU/Linux or BSD (or even less supported) related is when you’re very picky about privacy. I think this is also quite obvious.

    GNU should be left out of the Linux name.. I have been using Windows and Linux for almost 15 years, and OSX for like 3 years i think. They all have their strong points, they all have their weak points.. and most importantly, they all have properties which PISS ME OFF TO NO END!

    I am a software engineer by trade (platform, web, embedded, mobile) and they’re all fine.. except for GNU. Everything that has the GNU name attached to it is a piece of garbage written by backwards idiots!

    It bothers me when people talk about Linux as if its a giant living in the clouds.. or as if it were even a single entity. Truth is, Linux is whatever you want it to be.. there is a lot of shit out there you use and wouldn’t even imagine that it’s Linux.. and there is also a lot of shit out there that will make you curse the Linux name.. it’s just a kernel. And it’s not the kernel’s fault when some big cult of weirdos create a distro and then create a load of backwards rules for using it.. just like it’s not Windows fault when some random website tricks you into installing a virus. claiming to be a “deluxe video player” or something like that.

    Linux = Kernel
    GNU = Garbage

    Every Distro of Linux (Debian, RedHat, etc) = Linux Kernel with a load of other freeware piled on top and a fancy name / logo attached to it.
